NATIONAL SERVICE ALLOWANCE REVISED UPWARDS


The mandatory one-year National Service Scheme established under article 426 of the 1992 constitution requires every Ghanaian graduate from an accredited tertiary institution to serve the nation for a period of one year.

To this effect, it has generated mixed feelings among the lots as some find it a true commitment to one's nation whilst other compatriots want answers to some thought provoking questions like, adequacy of monthly stipends, place of service and their prospects thereafter.

In the era of COVID-19 pandemic and  its holdover especially 2022/2023 year, many service personnels could not survive the meagre GHC559.00 monthly allowance and this has led to a call for upwards review of the allowance to meet the current economic conditions.

In response, the National Service Scheme has engaged the government, Fair Wages and Salary Commission among other stakeholders for considerations and subsequent increment of the personnels' monthly allowance which has finally seen the light of the day in a press release by the scheme as read as follows:

NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME SECURES GOVERNMENT APPROVAL FOR UPWARD
ADJUSTMENT OF MONTHLY ALLOWANCES FOR NATIONAL SERVICE PERSONNEL

1. The Management of the National Service Scheme has secured government approval for upward adjustment of monthly allowances for National Service Personnel from GH¢559.04 to GH¢715.57, with effect from January, 2023.

2. The approval, which was contained in a letter dated 18th July, 2023 and signed by the Deputy Minister for Finance, Hon. Abena Osei-Asare (MP), was as a result of series of engagements between National Service Scheme, Fair Wages and Salaries, Commission and the Ministry of Finance.

3. The letter also directed The Controller and Accountant-General to give effect to the new levels of the personnel allowances.

4. In effect, all National Service Personnel who are currently in active service are entitled to arrears for the difference in the upward adjustment from January, 2023, and would be paid accordingly.

5. Management therefore urges all National Service Personnel to exercise patience as the necessary administrative processes are being concluded to have all the arrears duly paid.
